[00:01] I very much got into extreme dressing, very high shoes,
[00:08] see through diaphanus clothes, but much in the fifties vein,
[00:15] very cinched in wastes and high boof on hairstyles.
[00:20] And I found that when I came to look at shops like Let It Rock, which was
[00:25] in the King's Road here, I was very much on a parallel with
[00:30] what people like Vivian Westwood were doing at the time.
[00:33] Subversion lies in unpopular ideas, because the world is full of
[00:38] popular ideas that are constantly being mixed around,
[00:43] and all the orthodox doctrinaire received opinion, that is what popular ideas are
[00:51] about. And it's only unpopular ideas that are capable of
[00:57] slowly gleaning a few disciples until the end,
[01:02] until in the end, it's possible for them to have an effect because they are
[01:06] original. Most things that I did in those days were
[01:10] really gut feelings and exploring worlds that I found seductive
[01:19] and I guess if I had to put myself online at the time to
[01:26] basically prevent myself from being beaten up by
[01:29] what were uxbridge teddy boys coming in, pill-fringing the store and
[01:34] in the end there were too many for me to combat. I decided to go down another
[01:38] route, one that also dealt with clothes that
[01:42] spawn another sexuality. And I think the idea of
[01:48] sex clothes that could be bought only in the mail order catalogs at the bottom
[01:52] pages of the back of the observer through brown paper being sent through the
[01:57] post intrigued me now end and I went off in search to discover
[02:03] how these clothes were made and who were the people making them and
[02:06] could I do business with them and built up a little network,
[02:11] found them to be a whole vast army, underground army
[02:16] in England making for one of a better description
[02:20] rubber and leather fetishware and I felt that
[02:25] that would look fun and exciting on the king's road because
[02:31] it would have a similar if a similar kind of a frontry
[02:37] that teddy boy clothes had except it would be new because
[02:42] it hadn't been seen in that context and the thought that you would sell it to
[02:46] the young and uninitiated to the virgins of the street
[02:50] from as far afield as beckon and high school or somewhere
[02:54] excited to be knowing him. I commuted I should think for about
[03:00] two years from seaford which is very small and very sleepy.
[03:05] Malcolm and Vivian had a very strange relationship
[03:08] fraught might be the word for it. I've never been quite sure exactly what
[03:14] the percentage of work and what came from where but I mean I've certainly seen
[03:19] a few punch-ups between them. They never ever compromised if they wanted a
[03:23] special button for a jacket then they would search
[03:28] to the ends of the earth until they found it. They had to be just right
[03:33] all the rubber wear being treated properly before it came in the shop and being
[03:37] polished and they were perfectionists. I think the
[03:45] rain the whole of the king's road was empty. You look in all the shops but
[03:50] my shop was full and I used to wake up in the morning and you know how it
[03:53] rained so much in England perhaps a little less today
[03:56] because the old green thing but and because it rained I just knew I wake up
[04:01] anymore I was so happy because I knew my shop would be full because
[04:04] all the rubber people loved to come out in the rain because they can wear their
[04:07] rubber clothes and my shop would be full people driving from Bristol and Lincoln
[04:12] Sharon and Cambridge and everywhere. I didn't have that many young people
[04:17] and suddenly the doors burst open one Saturday and there's trail of young people
[04:22] who were sheepish at first and terrified of coming in suddenly decided to pop
[04:26] their heads in. The shop had this very strange effect
[04:39] it seemed to bring together all these kids from all over the place
[04:43] and they didn't seem to be any limits to where people would come to come
[04:47] from to visit the shop. You know we'd have kids coming from Northern Ireland
[04:52] and stuff and buying a load of things all in one go obviously
[04:57] but mainly the suburbs. It was almost like there was a little group
[05:02] a big group of people just waiting for something like this out in the suburbs
[05:07] and once they'd come to the shop they were almost addicted to it.
[05:11] You know we had a little joke going on about the Bromley contingent.
[05:16] Bromley contingent was Susie, Susie Sue, Steve Severin,
[05:20] the Steve Bailey, Sharon, Sharon Heyman, Simone, Simone Thomas,
[05:26] Billy Broad, I went on to be Billy Eidler, myself
[05:30] and that was the main nucleus. Usually on a weekend like a Friday or Saturday night
[05:35] we'd all get done up and go to Bromley South to the station
[05:39] and go up and to the west end. When we came friendly with Susie she
[05:45] had discovered this club called Leezes
[05:48] and she decided that we were going to all dress up fantastic and just go up
[05:52] to this club on a Friday night in the west end because we all have very
[05:55] particular individual styles, myself and Susie and all those people connected.
[06:01] Mine came from Cabaret and from Christopher Isherwood, that kind of thing.
[06:05] Susie's came from a kind of fifties, sixties, made tree-sea kind of glamour.
[06:13] I was well interested letters and I think I'd discovered sex,
[06:17] the shop sex then, so I had things like
[06:21] and also she and me, that was cheap, cheap SNM gear,
[06:27] but I always like the black, shiny black
[06:30] and I was always attracted to dark-haired women.
[06:34] I like the Marylands and that but I was really attracted to people like Carolyn
[06:38] Jones and Ada Barr, I'd Louis Brooks
[06:42] and I was a Betty Boob and there's so much going into what I look and why I look
[06:49] and part of it is to be threatening looking,
[06:52] part of it is to be confrontational.
